You’ve just been served with divorce papers and you feel like your entire world is about to crumble. What do you do first? Contact an attorney for a consultation to obtain legal advice on how to protect your assets. Look for an attorney with expertise. Is the attorney a Certified Family Law Specialist? A Certified Family Law Specialist is an attorney who has completed a certain number of Family Law trials which vary from division of property to child custody. There are other requirements an attorney must meet in order to apply to take the Specialization exam. They include: 1- An attorney who has practiced law in California for five consecutive years, 2- An attorney who has completed over 45 hours of legal education in a three year span (non-certified attorneys are only required to participate in 25 hours in a three year span) Finally, an attorney may identify themself as a Certified Specialist once they have passed the written specialist examination and have been approved by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization.
One could say that a Family Law Specialist is an “expert” in Family Law due to the requirements they have had to meet. Having an attorney who focuses on one area of law will be in your best interests because that attorney will be better informed on the law that applies to your case.
